Stürmt die Kunsthalle

Mannheim/Rhein-Neckar, 15. Dezember 20177. (red/pro) Die neue Kunsthalle Mannheim, der Hector-Bau, lädt ab heute Abend zu einem Wochenende der offenen Tür. Kunst gibt es bis auf wenige Exponate keine zu sehen – dafür aber das fertige Gebäude, was ein besonderes Erlebnis sein wird. Am Montag wohnt Bundespräsident der Schlüsselübergabe des aktuell deutschlandweit größten Museumsneubaus bei.

Es ist Mittwochnachmittag. Pressekonferenz. Wie immer bei Pressekonferenzen geht es niemals um die absolute Wahrheit, sondern eher um den schönen Schein. Aktuell zur neuen Kunsthalle in Mannheim, dem Hector-Bau.

Eine Lokalzeitung wird berichten, dass alle glücklich und dankbar sind. Der Oberbürgermeister Dr. Peter Kurz, der Baubürgermeister Lothar Quast, der Kulturbürgermeister Michael Grötsch, der Ehrenbürger Manfred Fuchs und der Architekt Nikolaus Goetze. Auch das Stifterehepaar Hector findet Erwähnung, die Direktorin Dr. Ulrike Lorenz sowie der Finanzvorstand der Stiftung, Uwe Bleich. Damit hat die Lokalzeitung ihren informatorischen Auftrag der vollständigen Namensnennung der Anwesenden auf dem Podium erfüllt. Und wir auch.

Wenn noch ein Mal einer „lichtdurchflutet“ sagt, werde ich zum Mörder,

sagt ein Kollege neben mir, den ich sehr schätze. Es ist 16:30 Uhr. Draußen ist es dunkel. Das voluminöse, 21 Meter hohe Atrium erstrahlt – in künstlichem Licht.

 

 

Ich bin das erste Mal in diesem aktuell größten Museumsneubau in Deutschland. Bislang hatten meine Mitarbeiter Termine während der Bauphase übernommen. Mit glüht der Kopf. Haushalt der Stadt Mannheim. Prozess gegen Schlägerbande. So viele angefangene Recherchen stapeln sich auf dem Schreibtisch. Keine Ahnung, wie ich das alles schaffen soll. Und jetzt das hier. Fast 30 Seiten Pressemitteilung, sechs Redner, eine Führung mit vielen Informationen – genug Stoff, um sich zwei, drei Tage mit dem Thema zu befassen.

Das ist ein besonderer Moment für diese Stadt – eine einhunderjährige Vision wurde realisiert. Durch ein großartiges bürgerschaftliches Engagement. Oberbürgermeister Dr. Peter Kurz

Ich höre den Rednern zu, mache Notizen, scherze mit dem Kollegen. Ich schaue den Kameraleuten zu, die sich hinter den nicht gefüllten Reihen der Stühle aufgestellt haben. Ich höre die salbungsvollen Worte. Kein Redner sieht wirklich glücklich aus. Über ihnen hängt wandfüllend „Sefiroth“ von Anselm Kiefer. 9,5 Meter hoch. Eigentlich wuchtig – hier aber fast spielerisch ausgestellt.

Ich spüre, wie dieser Raum etwas mit mir macht. Über 700 Quadratmeter umfasst dieses Entree. Er ist riesig. Und das befreit. Ich bekommen den Kopf frei – neugierig auf Neues. Was wird diese neue Kunsthalle mit der Stadt machen, was die Stadt mit der Kunsthalle? Welche Menschen werden aus aller Welt hierher gelockt? Mit welchen Eindrücken gehen sie wieder nach Hause? Welche Ausstellungen werden begeistern? Welche umstritten sein?

Der alte Mitzlaff-Bau war kein schönes Gebäude, aber auch nicht so abschreckend, wie Architekt Goetze meint. Richtig ist: Seine Möglichkeiten waren sehr beschränkt. Beispiel: Die neuen Ebenen lassen die Skulpturen aus vielen Perspektiven betrachten, die damit neue Eindrücke erlauben.

Im Hintergrund quietschen gedämpft Geigen. Später werde ich sehen, warum. Sie sind Teil einer Installation von Rebecca Horn. Das Gequietsche steht in seltsamem Kontrast zu diesem halligen Raum, der nicht hallt.

Kurios ist auch, dass ein neues Museum „öffnet“, um gleich wieder zu schließen. Denn es gibt noch Probleme mit dem Klima und der Sicherheitstechnik. Geplant war das nicht – aber hätte etwas Großartigeres passieren können als ein eben nicht reibungsloser Ablauf?

 

 

Ab heute Abend bis zum Sonntag kann man den Neubau der Kunsthalle kostenfrei besuchen – der weitestgehend keine Kunst, sondern überwiegend leere Räume zeigt. Am Montag nimmt Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier bei der Übergabe des 68,3 Millionen Euro teuren Hector-Bau teil. 50 Millionen Euro gab das Ehepaar Hector in eine Stiftung, zehn Millionen Euro die Stadt Mannheim, der Rest waren Zuschüsse und Spenden aus der Bürgerschaft, von Unternehmen und Städtebauförderung.

Der Besuch des fast leeren Museums ist ein Erlebnis. Wie oft im Leben hat man schon die Gelegenheit, 5.500 Quadratmeter Ausstellungsfläche (inklusive des historischen Billing-Jugendstilbau) fast ohne Ausstellung zu erleben? Angeordnet in sieben Schau-Häusern, unterteilt in Kuben zwischen 290 bis 450 Quadratmetern, durchbrochen von Plätzen, Brücken und Treppen. Eine „Stadt in der Stadt“, wie Dr. Lorenz das nennt. Das funktioniert herausragend. Ab dem 01. Juni 2018 soll das Haus dann mit Ausstellungen öffnen – da werde ich dabei sein und den konstrastierenden Eindruck genießen.

Das Konzept, in den Dialog zu treten, zieht sich durch den Bau. Er ist eine Schatzkammer für Kunstwerke, muss also eine Art Tresor sein, gleichzeitig aber derart offen, wie man das nur selten erleben kann. Die Direktorin Dr. Lorenz will Begegnungsorte schaffen – auch durch Kunstwerke, die sich reiben. Dazu passt dieses noch leere Museum und auch die Debatte um die umstrittene Fassade aus „Mesh“ – einem beweglichen Drahtgeflecht.

Der Hector-Bau passt sich nur mäßig in die Umgebung ein. Na und? Hätte man ein Jugendstil-Gebäude bauen sollen? Dieser Bau an einer der schönsten Jugendstilanlagen Europas, dem Friedrichsplatz mit dem Wasserturm, dem Wahrzeichen der Stadt Mannheim, fordert heraus und damit herein. Wie könnte man besser für Kunst interessieren? Man kommt an diesem Gebäude nicht vorbei, ohne es nicht zu beachten. Die Herausforderung macht neugierig.

 

 

 

Eigentlich ist der Streit um das Gebäude ein wunderbares Geschenk – für den Dialog, die Hausforderung, die Auseinandersetzung. Eine kleine Bürgerinitiative machte mächtig Wind – unterstützt von einer Lokalzeitung. Laut einer Umfrage gefällt angeblich 70 Prozent der Mannheimer der äußere Bau nicht. Wie wunderbar – das heißt, 70 Prozent der Mannheimer haben sich schon damit auseinandergesetzt. Diese 70 Prozent sind aufgefordert, den Bau zu besuchen und sich zu reiben, erst außen, dann ihnen. Sie müssten die neue Kunsthalle an diesem Wochenende geradezu stürmen, um sich selbst ein Bild zu machen. Der in Deutschland nach Essen aktuell größte Museumsneubau steht weitestgehend leer – wenn das mal kein Anlass ist, sich das selbst kritisch anzuschauen.

Die Kunsthalle verfügt über eine der größten bürgerschaftlichen Sammlungen mit herausragender Kunst, der neu begegnet werden kann. Es soll ein Museum in Bewegung sein – das nimmt man der kleinen, quirligen Direktorin ab, während sie durchs Haus führt.

Der Bau ist im geplanten Finanzierungsrahmen geblieben – ob der Unterhalt und Betrieb das auch bleiben, ist abzuwarten. Die 50 Millionen Euro des Stifterehepaars Dr. h.c. Hans-Werner (SAP-Mitgründer) und Josephine Hecktor hat den Bau möglich gemacht. Herausragend unterstützt durch private Spenden. Geplant hat mit gmp ein international erfolgreiches Architektenbüro aus Hamburg.

Die Tage der offenen Tür beginnen heute Abend um 18 Uhr. Wenn man das Gebäude lichtdurchflutet erleben möchte, sollte man dies allerdings am Samstag oder Sonntag besuchen.

Let‘s storm the Kunsthalle

Mannheim/Rhein-Neckar, December 15, 2017. (red/pro) Mannheim’s newest venue for art exhibitions, Kunsthalle Mannheim’s new “Hector Building”, is opening its doors for an open house weekend tonight. Apart from a few exhibits there isn’t much art to see – except the finished building, which will be a special experience. On Monday, Germany’s Federal President will take part in the ceremonial hand-over of keys of what is currently Germany’s biggest new museum building.

It’s Wednesday afternoon. Press conference. As usual at press conferences it’s not going to be about the absolute truth but more about the tinsel and glitter. In this case about the new art gallery in Mannheim, Kunsthalle’s “Hector Building”.

A local newspaper will report, that everyone is happy and thankful: Lord Mayor Dr. Peter Kurz, Deputy Mayor for Building and Construction Lothar Quast, Deputy Mayor for Culture Michael Grötsch, Honorary Citizen Manfred Fuchs, and Architect Nikolaus Goetze. They will go on to name the founders of the Hector Foundation, the museum’s director Dr. Ulrike Lorenz, and the foundations financial director Uwe Bleich, thus fulfilling their informational duty by naming everyone present on the podium. Now we’ve fulfilled that duty as well.

If one more person says “suffused with light”, I’m going to turn killer,

says the colleague next to me, a colleague I esteem. It’s 4:30 pm. It’s dark outside. The huge atrium, 21 meters high, is suffused – with artificial light.

It’s my first time in what is currently Germany’s biggest new museum building. During the building stages, my employees (contributors) had taken part in media relation events. My head is about to burst. Mannheim’s city budget. A trial against a gang of thugs. So many research topics – begun but not finished – covering my desk. No idea how I’m supposed to finish it all. And now this. Almost 30 pages of press release, six speakers, a tour of the building with heaps of information – enough to spend two or three days going into depth.

This is a very special moment for this city – a one hundred year old vision has been realized. Through outstanding civic involvement. Lord Mayor Dr. Peter Kurz.

I listen to the speakers, take notes, joke with the colleague. I watch the camera crews who have assembled behind the not quite filled rows of seats. I hear the lofty words. None of the speakers looks truly happy. Above them a wall is filled with Anselm Kiefer’s “Sefiroth”. 9.5 meters in height. Massive in theory – here the display is almost playful.

I feel how the room touches me. Over 700 square meters just for the entrance atrium. It’s vast. And that has a liberating effect. My head clears – and makes me curious for something new. What will this new Kunsthalle (gallery of art) do to the city – and vice versa? Who will be enticed to come here from all corners of the world? Which impressions will they take back home? Which exhibitions will thrill them? Which will be controversial?

The old Mitzlaff building was no beauty – but not as off-putting as the architect Nikolaus Goetze wants us to believe. What is true: its possibilities were very limited. For example the new array of levels will allow an unobstructed view of sculptures from several perspectives and thus allow for new impressions.

In the background we can hear the muted squeak of violins. Later I will see why. They are part of an installation by Rebecca Horn. The squeaking is a strange contrast to this echo hall that has no echo.

We have here one of the most prominent collections of modern and contemporary art derived from private collections of our citizens. Deputy Mayor Michael Grötsch.

Another oddity: the museum is opening only to close again immediately, since there are several problems with the air conditioning and security installations. This was certainly not planned – but what greater gift could have been given than this unexpected snag in the scheduled course?

Starting tonight and until Sunday visitors can tour the Kunsthalle’s new building free of charge – and view predominantly empty rooms with just a sprinkling of art. On Monday, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will attend the transfer of the € 68.3 million Hector building to the city of Mannheim. € 50 million were donated to the foundation by Hans-Werner and Josephine Hector, € 10 million were added by the city of Mannheim, the rest is a mixture of grants and donations from citizens and corporations, and urban development programs.

Visiting the almost empty museum is a true experience. How often in life does one get to walk through 5,500 square meters of exhibition space (including the historic Art Nouveau Billing building) – with barely any exposition? Arranged in seven “exhibition houses”, divided into cubes of between 290 and 450 square meters, intersected with patios, bridges, and stairs. A “city within a city”, as Dr. Lorenz calls it. It works amazingly well. On June 1, 2018 the building is set to open with an exhibition – I plan to be there and enjoy the contrasting impression.

The concept of dialogue is visible throughout the building. It is a treasury for art and has to be a kind of strong room, but at the same time it is open in a way that is rarely experienced. The museum’s director Dr. Ulrike Lorenz wants to create places and moments of encounter – literally and through works of art that clash. The still-empty museum and the controversial debate about the building’s facade made of mobile wire mesh go well with this theme.

The Hector building fits in only moderately well where it stands. So what. Would an art nouveau building have been better? This building in one of the most beautiful art nouveau ensembles in Europe, the Friedrichsplatz with Mannheim’s landmark “Wasserturm”, throws down the gauntlet and challenges the viewer. How better to stimulate an interest in art. One can’t pass the building by without noticing it. The challenge (oder provocation) is intriguing.

In the end, the controversy about the building is a wonderful gift – for the dialog, the challenge, the debate. A small group of citizens brewed up a storm, abetted by a local newspaper. According to a survey, 70 percent of Mannheim’s citizens don’t like the building’s facade. How wonderful – that means that 70 percent of Mannheim’s citizens have actually taken the time to think about it. These 70 percent are invited to visit the building and spar with it – first on the outside, then on the inside. I would expect them to literally storm the new Kunsthalle this weekend, to come to their own conclussions about the finished building. The biggest new museum building in Germany behind Essen is almost completely empty – what an occasion to take one’s own critical look.

The Kunsthalle is caretaker of one of the biggest collections of outstanding art derived from private collections of Mannheim’s citizens that can now be encountered in a new setting. It is meant to be a museum in motion – anyone would take the slight and lively director’s word for it as she gives the tour through the house. The building itself remained within the projected financial framework – whether maintenance and operation will do the same will remain to be seen. The 50 million Euros donated by Dr. h.c. Hans-Werner Hector (SAP co-founder) and his wife Josephine Hector have made the building possible along with other prominent private donations. With gmp, an international successful office of architects from Hamburg had the planning of the building.

The open house starts tonight at 6 pm. If you want to see the building suffused with light, a visit on Saturday or Sunday would be more opportune.
